YVC - Read and Play at 2nd Street Learning and Technology Center
Join us at the Second Street Learning and Technology Center to read and play games with pre-school aged children attending the center. Along with Youth Volunteer Corps Staff, YVC participants will spend time with young children, ages 3-6 years old and lead simple activiites during the morning session.
Located in the lower level of Opportunity House at 430 North 2nd Street, the Second Street Learning Center opened in October 1996 to give homeless mothers an opportunity to participate in lifeskill classes offered at the shelter. It quickly became the answer to working parents in the Reading area. A combination of an increased need for these services and support from the community allowed the learning center to expand their hours, becoming the first 24-hour a day, 7-day a week childcare program focused on meeting the needs of low-income families in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The learning center added an additional seven classrooms in September 2011 with the addition of the Technology Center.
Today, the program serves over 450 children in the community, ages 6 weeks to 13 years old. Of these children served, 98% come from families at or below the poverty level.
This opportunity is reserved for our Youth Volunteer Corps members, ages 11-18.
