S.T.A.R. Film Discussion Series (Racial Equity/Social Justice)
Join student leaders from the YVC Stand Together Against Racism youth initiative to discuss thought-provoking films about race. Watch the movie (or read the book) prior to the virtual discussion. Students and adults are welcome to join us! Discussions are held via zoom.
February 28, 2024. "Rustin" - a film based on the story of Bayard Rustin, adviser to Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy. However, as an openly gay Black man, he was all but erased from the civil rights movement he helped build.
March 27, 2024 "The Hate U Give" -- Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds -- the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right.
April 24, 2024 "JoJo Rabbit" -- A World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy named Jojo whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism. We will be joined by members of the Jewish Federation for this discussion centering on anti-semitism. All are welcome!
